Northern Virginia Family Photographer | Sunset Family Session

The life of a boy mom, I know this very well. Our days are filled with noise and dirt and lots of bathroom humor. But boys have this incredible gift to bringing us mamas to the edge, and then turn to us and say, "You are the best Mama in the entire world". Yes, boys can be loud and can be very messy, but they are also so kind, so gentle, and boy oh boy, do boys love their mamas.

I met this Mama and all her boys to my favorite location for outdoor sunset sessions, 48 Fields, for their annual family portrait session. I have had the honor to have photographed this family since the beginning of their family.

You may remember last year's family session. If not you can find it here. But that evening the sky got very dark and eerie. As soon as the last clicked the shutter for the last time and we said our goodbyes, the sky opened up and it poured. Thankfully, this year, we had nothing but clear skies and beautiful warm sunshine!

Family is Everything!

I think one of the greatest joys as a mother is watching your children become best friends. To know that your children will be life-long allies, to know they will always be there for each other, in good times and in times of heartache. That they will always have each other for support and encouragement. To know that they will always have the greatest bond that only siblings can have. They share their childhood memories, they share your love. They are all pieces of you. There is no greater gift you can give to your child, than the gift of siblings. They may not always agree, but their love and friendship for each other bonds them together for a lifetime.

Spotlight Interview From Shoot Along | Northern VA Family Photographer

Have you heard of Shoot Along?

It is an outstanding resource for moms who want to learn how to better capture beautiful images of their own families! It is filled with weekly photography lessons and tons of inspiration!

Shoot Along was established by award-winning photographers, Amy Tripple and Heidi Peters. These talented ladies created Shoot Along to "give themselves structure and accountability to capture their own families and decided it would be a great concept to share with other parents".

Each week, they feature a photographer they admire in their weekly newsletter. Recently, they had asked me to be one of their featured photographers, and I could not have been more honored!

What they asked of me was to photograph portraits of my own children and give a few thoughts about what I did to make the shot happen.

You can find the entire spotlight interview here!!!

Above, is the image that I sent in. I recently took this portrait of my oldest and my youngest, and it is currently one of my favorite images of them. I believe it truly exemplifies their special relationship. And as a mama, I hope they always remain close friends and allies. Because my oldest son loves his baby sister so much and she simply adores him and everything he does.

Photographing your only children, can be difficult and frustrating at times. But it is so important to take the time to capture these fleeting moments. Because they only get one childhood, and we will never get this time back with our babies.

This project that the ladies over at Shoot Along are doing is great, and I highly recommend checking it out!

Here is a snippet of their feature of Quiet Side Photography:

ShootAlongHow do you make documenting your family through photography a priority?

Kate: It's no secret that time seems to pass at warp speed once you have children. I feel like my oldest son was just born, and now I am getting ready to send him to kindergarten in a few weeks. It is so important to document as much you can, because they are only this little for such a short amount of time. A photograph can take you back to that moment with them. It is easy, as a mom, to get lost in the day to day with diaper changes, toys everywhere, and never ending laundry. But when we step back there is so much beauty with life with small children. I will admit, having an actual photo session with my children can be challenging. But I do try to take them for actual sessions with me every few months to document who they are at that moment. It's the only way I can freeze this time with them so I can always revisit it.

ShootAlongTell us about the image you've shared? What makes it special to you? What did you do to make it happen?

Kate: My style of photography is very simple. I do not do overly posed, everyone look at the camera and smile, type of images. I much prefer images where the love and connection of a family comes shining through, whether it be with a fit of laughter or a quiet, gentle moment. This image just pulls at my heartstrings. It is of my oldest and my youngest, when my sweet girl was just beginning to take her first steps. It is amazing to see how my son loves to help her achieve this new milestone. She often crawls up to him, climbs up his leg and they go for walks around the house together holding hands. I wanted to document this special bond they had together.

As I knew that this would come naturally, I directed my son to go over near my daughter and talk to her. As he did, she crawled over to him, climbed up his leg and they went for one of their strolls. I knew, if it was forced, it wouldn't have been authentic, and would probably result in my daughter not wanting to hold hands and quite possibly end in tears. And that's not what I wanted to capture. Instead, I set up the situation and waited until the moment happened naturally.

I love that I was able to capture this special moment between siblings. They have such a special bond and adore each other. This moment of my daughter learning to walk is fleeting, I'll never get this time back. Not only does this image document this huge milestone in her life, but it captures the beautiful and unique bond they have for each other, as siblings.

Thank you so much, for the feature, Shoot Along. It truly is an honor!!!

A Mother's Perspective-Kindergarten is approaching | Loudoun County Child Photographer

As I sit here, one week before kindergarten approaches for my first born, I can't help but be a little sad.

I keep catching myself staring at him, wondering when did he get so big. As my facebook memories floods me with images of him when he was so little, and yet, it feels like yesterday.

I'm finding myself savoring each moment left of our summer vacation, of our time left before this new adventure begins.

I have been so grateful to have the last five years with him, and though sometimes it felt like it was so long, it went by so quickly. And now, he's about to take his first steps towards independence.

I want to return for a moment those days of holding that sweet ball of chunk. Even the long days filled with a crying colicky baby as we listen to the Mary Poppins soundtrack because only the singing of Julie Andrews could calm him down (and a bit of Plumb too). I want to return to the nights when the house was quiet and we rocked together in the nursery.

I loved watching every minute of him growing and learning and becoming a friend and the best big brother. But I'm feeling a little nostalgic of those moments when it was just me and him. Because in one week, he will be gone for so much of the day. And I have to share him. And I will miss him terribly.

I'm so excited for him. This is such a huge milestone in his life. So I try to hide my tears. They are happy tears, they are. Mixed with some sad tears.

I know I'm not the only Mama who feels this way.

I guess this the essence of motherhood.

So excited for them to grow but wishing they would stay little forever.

The Unbreakable Bond with your First Born Child | Leesburg Family Photographer

There is something about your first baby. She was the one who made you a Mama. You look at her and you see her both as a baby and a young woman. When did she get so big? Why does time pass by so quickly? She has taught you more about life and love and yourself than anyone ever could. She challenges you in ways you never knew existed. She pushes you to the edge of exhaustion and frustration and in the next minute melts your heart and you could not be any prouder of her. To her, you are her hero and her pillar of strength. You are her biggest supporter. Yes, there is something special about your first born. She taught you how to be a mother. And she is loved more than she will ever know.

There is never a wrong time to be photographed with your children. Portraits are tangible reminders how fiercely they are loved. Life is short, things change in the blink of an eye. I can not stop time for you, but I can freeze this moment for you both (and future generations) to cherish forever.

The G Family | Purcellville Family Photographer

I'll be honest, family sessions may be my favorite sessions to photograph. I love being able to capture their connection and the individual personalities that each member brings that makes each family unique.

I have had the privilege of photographing this family for the last few years. They have been huge supporters of mine as I grew my business and have been cheerleaders of mine since the very beginning. And this beautiful family are very special to me.

When I look at these images, I can't help but smile. They radiate joy! There is so much love in this group. It's easy to see.

And these two boys...talk about personality. Sweet Tristan even brought his harmonica to play a little tune just for me.

Being able to photograph gorgeous families like this makes me so grateful that I pursued my photography dream. And I hope to be so lucky to continue to capture these sweet moments and freeze time for this family for years to come.

There is nothing like the bond between sisters.

They are each others best friends, closest confidant, allies.

Sisters truly carry each other through life.

If you are lucky to have an amazing sister like these two have, then you are lucky enough!

One of the things I am passionate about with my photography, is photographing motherhood. We, as moms, are typically behind the lens trying to document every milestone for our children and or family, that we often times forget to be in the pictures.

We always make some excuse why we aren't in it, mostly due to how we look. But I'm going to let you in on a little secret, our children do not care what we look like. Because they love us. These moments with them are fleeting. And we can never go back in time to be in the images with our babies. It's so important. Because one day, these images will be the most valuable possessions to our children, and to us as mothers.

This session was supposed to be "just the kids". But we couldn't let an opportunity go by without this beautiful Mama in the images as well.

There is never a wrong time to be in photographs with your children.

Mama & Me in Tennessee | Loudoun County Baby Photographer

This past fall, I had the opportunity to travel to Nashville to attend a workshop with the amazingly talented Jenny Cruger of Jenny Cruger Photography, for her Motherhood Workshop.  During the workshop, we had the opportunity to all have a session with this gorgeous mother and daughter duo in her studio and in her field.

The love this mama has for her beautiful little girl just radiates throughout each image.

It was such a wonderful opportunity to learn and meet other extremely talented photographers. The workshop has left me with so many great ideas for the direction of Quiet Side Photography, and I can not wait to share them with you.
